Dear Parents/Guardians:

Holy Week is upon us and on Holy Thursday we will have TRIDUUM services. This is an opportunity to teach students about the richness and beauty of this most sacred time of our year. Please know that the Mother Teresa community is welcome to join us for this service on April 21 at 9:00 a.m. in the gym.

Lent has been a time of soulful reflection here at MT. Our students and staff are gathering for prayer and we are well on our way to ThinkFast which will take place on Friday, April 29th. Our students have welcomed the opportunities for leadership in justice, prayer and service throughout this holy season. This community is truly blessed with strong people who have committed themselves to promoting solidarity with believers in our community and globally.

I've said it before and I say it again now, I am so proud of our students and staff and I am deeply grateful to be among you.

As always, hold us in prayer as we seek to live out God's joyful mission for our world..

MT TEACHER RECEIVES GOLDEN APPLE AWARD

Congratulations to Mr. Todd Stuart who received the Golden Apple award from Majic 100 on Thursday, April, 14, 2011. Mr. Stuart received his award in front of students and colleagues in the High School gym. It took him by surprise and he was extremely humbled by this award.

Mr. Stuart was nominated by a student who wrote a great letter to Majic 100 explaining why Mr. Stuart should win this award. His dedication to student success combined with his gift of teaching made him an excellent candidate. Mr. Stuart's class 8-06 (class of the student who nominated him) will receive a pizza party from Majic 100 and $500.00 towards a school-based initiative.

As you may be aware, Mother Teresa students participated in a trip to Costa Rica over the March Break. TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY

The Ministry of Education requires schools to conduct anonymous school climate surveys of their students, parents, and teachers every two years. These surveys must include questions on bullying/harassment related to homophobia, gender-based violence, and sexual harassment. In Catholic schools, our Catholic teaching on the dignity of the human person is the starting point for all issues of diversity. We are One Body in Christ. Catholic schools strive to create an environment where all students and staff feel safe, valued and welcomed.

Parents/guardians are an integral part of our MT community and we would also like to solicit your feedback to help guide us and make sure we are always moving forward in a positive direction.

Please take a moment to complete the parent survey. It can be found on our Mother Teresa Website http://www.mths.ca. The Tell Them from Me Survey link is located on the left- hand side of this page in green.

Contact school for login and password.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at the school.

VOCAL WORKSHOP

The Jeff Rogers Experience

by Victoria Petrilli, Student

About 10 Mother Teresa students and I received the opportunity to take part in a vocal workshop during the week of March 28th to April 1st. We had the very talented singer/songwriter Jeff Rogers come to our school and be our instructor.

Jeff Rogers has been a professional musician since the ripe age of 18. As a child, he always gravitated toward piano. During high school, he took interest in alto sax and jazz music. He was appointed 1st chair alto in the Musicfest National All-Star Band in Vancouver at only 17. After graduating from high school, he took up guitar and vocals and has since perfected his vocal technique and stage presence.

Jeff taught us all the key pointers for any and every singer. We learned different types of breathing and warm-up exercises, what key our individual voices sound the best in, harmonizing, stage presence, how to use a microphone properly, some theory, and a little bit of yoga.

To show off our new-found skills to the rest of the school, we put on a showcase during both lunches on Friday, April 1st. There were solo performances, small group performances and a whole group performance of "Stayin' Alive". Jeff accompanied most students with groovy piano tunes and perfect harmonies.

The atmosphere of the whole week was so easygoing and relaxing. We are all just aspiring musicians, willing to learn and perform and we did do just that. Thanks to Jeff for being our instructor and Mrs. O'Malley for putting the workshop together.

GRADE 7/8 MATH CONTEST

Sixty of our Grade 7/8 math students wrote the Mathematica Centrum Contest on Wednesday, April 13. This contest is an opportunity for our students to compete against other Canadian math students, testing their problem-solving skills and math knowledge. Students were recommended by their math teachers and prepared on their own time for the test. Results will be forwarded to the school in late May.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

March has flown by but somehow we still managed High School Progress Reports, Parent teacher interviews, the School Play BREAK A LEG, countless sporting and other activities, the canned food drive and of course the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test for our Grade 10s. We also hosted our family of schools' principals for a morning meeting and we had five new student teachers join our staff at Mother Teresa - oh, I also think we had a break somewhere in the month.

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some well-deserved rest, relaxation and time to re-connect as a family during these busy times. As our Lenten Journey continues may you continue to remember that "God is Our Refuge and Strength".

BREAK A LEG

Congratulations to Ms. Caitlin Stuart and her fabulous cast and crew for an outstanding performance.

"The production team at Mother Teresa demonstrated audacity and enthusiasm in their performance of Break a Leg! The upbeat pace and rapid deliveries of lines posed a challenge skillfully overcome by members of the cast and crew."

OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD LAUNCHES FACEBOOK & TWITTER

Check this out!

We invite you to become a 'fan' by 'liking' us from your Wall. At this point, we won't be collecting 'friends', as that is a level of interactivity we can't properly monitor - maybe we'll go there in time, but presently we are sharing information about ourselves in a new way and hoping that you will come see us. This is a new venture for us. If you have any suggestions or experience to share, please contact us. We are still working on graphics, so please 'click' on links, rather than icons.
'Follow' us - most of our tweets will also show up on Facebook.

BRETT ULLMAN - MEDIA, CULTURE & FAITH

Brett Ullman presented to our Grade 10 students on Monday, April 4th and then parents had the opportunity to hear him speak in the evening. The feedback from both the students and the parents was extremely positive. I had the opportunity to listen to Brett as he spoke to parents. Brett is often introduced as an expert on media influences and his presentation to the students and parents focused on discussing, exploring and reflecting on the impact of a media-saturated world. He challenged us to reflect on what we know, what we believe, and how our Ancient Faith ought to serve as the lens through which we view and engage in modern culture. If you ever get the chance to hear Brett speak, it would be time well spent.

Brett shared with us some resources that you may find valuable as parents:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As you may be aware, OC Transpo is carrying out a Network optimization process which could result in changes in service beginning September 2011.

The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) has held preliminary meetings with OC Transpo staff and in some cases the proposed change in service will have minimal impact on trips relied upon by students as there may be alternate transfers or trips available. However, there will be some cases where families and students may see a serious impact.

The OSTA staff are currently reviewing these proposals and where appropriate will be raising our concerns with OC Transpo.

More information can be obtained on the proposals at:
http://www.octranspo1.com/routes/2011_network_optimization. Each of the area proposals has its unique feedback form.

Please note that the last public consultation meeting is tonight, April 5 at the Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Blvd., Orleans from 7pm-9pm.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the OSTA office at (613) 224-8800.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Brett Ullman
"Media, Culture and Faith Parents 101"

Everyone Welcome!
7:00 p.m.
Caf Gym

Growing up you didn't have the internet, your friends didn't cut themselves, and text messaging wasn't even on the radar. How can we help guide our children to live Godly lives amidst this kind of cultural climate?

Brett Ullman discusses, from a parent's perspective, sensitive topics affecting today's young people including cutting, suicide, substance abuse, sex, and violence. Bringing hope and an awareness to today's parents, Brett sheds light on how, with increased knowledge of youth trends, adults can be more discerning in their parenting strategies and better able to anticipate the needs of their children as they navigate the often challenging waters of adolescence.
