Mother Teresa High School

MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN

The clubs have shut down for this year and students are preparing for exams and trips. I would like to thank the ACTS Team for their energy and ideas.  The last ACTS function is June 14, the year end liturgy.
S.A.A.E (Students Against the Axis of Evil) had a rather active season!  Between liturgies, conferences, special events and school work, members were able to still get excellent grades!  Kudos to all of you.

Roy G Biv has been busy tackling name calling and bullying.  We will resume next year with new energy and even better ideas for co-ordinating an inclusive and safe community for all Titans.

Currently we are in a food drive campaign.  We are hoping to help out the Barrhaven Food Cupboard with specific food items. The grade 7 & 8's are managing this campaign as the high school students are swamped.  Please encourage your children to participate.

The grades 9, 10 & 11 celebrated a year end mass with Fr. Monaghan on Monday June 4th.  It was a beautiful service. Thanks to everyone involved.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
During the week of May 15, Mother Teresa's English Department ran a Shakin' it with Shakespeare Competition. The English Department initiated this drama competition to promote the idea that Shakespeare is fun!

All classes were studying Shakespeare simultaneously. Along with this, each grade level created a task that involved drama, oral presenting, cooperative learning and writing skills. The grade nine students used this task as an opportunity to explore tableau. Students acted out and spoke about the scenes of conflict in Romeo and Juliet. The grade ten students wrote and performed a modern version of a scene from either The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night or Julius Caesar. Grade 11 students wrote and performed children's versions of Macbeth. Finally, grade 12 students wrote and performed parodies based on Othello, King Lear, and Hamlet. Teachers then chose a group to represent their class at the school-wide competition in the library. Excellent, well-prepared performances were put on for a large student audience. Winners at all grade levels provided top-notch entertainment and will forever be remembered. Their names were engraved on the Bard trophy, they were given a medal and rewarded with a pizza party.

THE LEARNING COMMONS
 FESTIVAL OF TREES
At the end of April, students in grades seven and eight were eligible to vote for their favourite nominated book on a province-wide voting day. Thanks to the participation of the Red Maple Club in this literacy initiative, Mother Teresa students attended the first ever Ottawa Festival of Trees. The event was sponsored by the Ontario Library Association and took place on May 17th at the Carleton University Field House. Mother Teresa was proudly represented by Riley Carson, a grade eight student, who introduced Patrick Bowman, author of Torn from Troy, in the opening ceremonies. This was an all day event wherein both students and teachers had the opportunity to meet authors, have books signed, attend workshops and participate in games while enjoying Busker-style entertainment. The results of the province-wide voting were also announced. The Red Maple winner was Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel, and the honour book, also referred to as the runner-up, was Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey. If given the opportunity, I, personally, recommend attending this literacy celebration... you won't be disappointed!

CAPPIES AWARDS GALA

Congratulations go out to all nominees who participated in Sunday night's Cappies Awards Gala! Special mention goes out to Antonio Pezoulas who was honoured with the Cappie award for the best lead actor in a musical. The MT nominees were supported by over 40 Jesus Christ Superstar cast and crew members who were in attendence for the event. Great show!

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Aritra Sengupta, went home a winner from TechU.me's AppJam Competition, taking home a cheque for $1,000, a Blackberry tablet, and a summer employment opportunity from WorldReach Software. Aritra's Air Hockey App was impressive, and overcame obstacles that included the adjustment of Android SDK to eliminate the gravity property. Congratulations to this technology enthusiast!

Congratulations to Lotty Pontones who won a $1000 scholarship to study in French Immersion at the University of Ottawa. Lotty was the winner of the contest, "Pourquoi parler Français?"
